What is the “Internet of Things”? It simply refers to things that can be connected to the internet! This is anything from the obvious computer or tablet, to a smart TV, wireless printer, internet-connected refrigerator, or even a whole WiFi wired home.
Although it is a simple idea, the possibilities are anything but. IoT is the network of “things” with the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring interaction from humans. This means these devices are not only able to take commands from humans, but they collect data and then flow the data to other devices by machine-to-machine technology. These smart devices also have the ability to process the data and make actual decisions. We already see this happening in devices such as the Nest smart thermostat. The Nest learns your temperature preferences after a short period and regulates the temperature without any commands from you. It even knows when you are gone because it doesn’t sense motion in the home, and will adjust the temperature accordingly.
Imagine the following scenario…you receive a text that a meeting is rescheduled for an hour earlier, which automatically updates your alarm clock, which turns on your coffee pot. As you drive away the lights in your home turn off automatically, doors lock and garage doors close. Your smart phone detects traffic congestion and maps a faster route to work, and you are notified of an open parking spot in the parking lot. All of this before you even get to work!
It may seem like a scary thought to some that are just learning the basics of the Internet itself, but it really is amazing what is possible with an Internet connection! At Consolidated we strive to remain on the cutting edge of technology, and we are here to guide our customers as technology evolves. The possibilities are endless for the IoT and we are excited to see what the future will hold!
